Mission & Story
Built on care. Driven by purpose.
GRIN was founded in 1992 by a group of golden retriever enthusiasts who saw a growing problem — too many dogs without safe, loving homes. What started as a small effort has grown into a dedicated rescue organization serving dogs across Northeast Ohio, Central Ohio, and Western Pennsylvania.
Our mission is simple: to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome golden retrievers and golden mixes in need.
We take in dogs from shelters, owner surrenders, puppy mills, breeder relinquishments, and other difficult situations. Some need basic care. Others need extensive medical treatment or behavioral support. No matter their background, we’re committed to giving each dog the opportunity for a better future.
What your support makes possible
For more than three decades, GRIN has been powered entirely by volunteers and supported by a community that cares deeply about this work.
4,300+ goldens placed in loving homes
30+ years of rescue and advocacy
100 percent volunteer-run organization
501(c)(3) nonprofit
Every dollar goes directly to the dogs
On average, we spend over $1,600 per dog, often more for those needing specialized care. Each year, the need continues to grow. More dogs are coming to us with medical challenges, behavioral needs, and complex histories — but we continue to say yes because of the support behind us.
Powered by volunteers
GRIN is run entirely by volunteers — people who give their time, energy, and expertise to make this work possible.
From foster families and transport volunteers to application teams and event coordinators, every role plays a part in each dog’s journey.
We don’t have a facility. We don’t have paid staff. What we have is a community that shows up — again and again — for dogs who need it most.
What to know before getting started
How does adoption work?
We take a thoughtful approach to matching dogs with the right homes. The process includes an application, review, and a meet-and-greet to ensure a strong fit for both you and the dog.
